Carbon fiber is a great material but it does have one major drawback. It brakes without warning. Well, sort of. Unlike aluminum or steel, both of which bend when compromised, carbon fiber just snaps. It is important to check on a regular basis your carbon fiber frame and or components for signs of wear and cracks.

I had noticed what appeared to be a long indentation in my seat post. I was even able to catch it with my fingernail but still continued to use it. Fifteen minutes into my forty-five minute ride I heard a snap. I thought it was just a twig I rode over until I went to sit down. Surprise! Thankfully I was able to still use the upper portion of the seat post. My pedaling style was a little cramped but I made it through the ride. So, Check yourself before you wreck yourself.
